FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO MY FIRST KARATE LESSON?
Make sure you wear comfortable clothes you can do Karate in! Skirts and kilts are not recommended for kicking 😉. Once you make the decision to join us, a Karate uniform (gi) will be required; until then, dress to train.

We do recommend you bring a water bottle to your martial arts classes though and a willingness to learn and to have a lot of fun!!

I'M NOT VERY SPORTY OR COORDINATED, WILL THAT BE A PROBLEM?
Not at all. In fact, many students starting in our adult martial arts classes would describe themselves like that before they started. So you will fit right in!
Give yourself some time, and you will be astounded at how much you improve! You’ll find that Renshi Joe has been trained to keep his teaching simple. So even the most uncoordinated person will develop ‘ninja-like’ skills! Come see for yourself!
HOW LONG UNTIL I GET MY BLACK BELT?
Truthfully, the journey to Black Belt is an individual one, but, as any experienced black belt will tell you, earning that belt is just the beginning of a wonderful journey. Everyone can progress at a different pace. There is no judgement on students for how long it does take. What we can tell you, is that it is SO WORTHWHILE!
The self defense skills you will master can truly be life-saving! However, the other benefits of striving for Black Belt, like perseverance, never giving up, commitment, and self discipline will lead to life-long success.

WHY DO I HAVE TO BOW?
Bowing is a gesture of both kindness and respect for another person. Great physical and mental power must be offset by making a habit of putting other people before oneself. As we gain strength and confidence, we also want to become kinder people. Bowing and other forms of martial arts etiquette are used as tools to help the karate student make kindness a habit.
